Stadshuset (City Hall) |
Stadshuset (City Hall) is a distinctive red brick building that dominates Kungsholmen (King's Island ), one of the sixteen major islands that form the city of Stockholm . The City Hall was completed in 1923; the building is massively constructed, designed for heavy use and low maintenance in Stockholm 's harsh weather. Yet it is also designed to celebrate Stockholm and Sweden , starting with the three golden crowns at the top of the tower. The "three crowns" have been the symbol for Sweden for at least 700 years, though exactly what they represent is a matter of debate. The City Hall, described as the last example of Sweden 's National Romantic style of architecture, has a superb lakeside site on the north shore of Riddarfjarden . The south-facing garden sits between the City Hall and the lake. It is in the Arts and Crafts style, beautifully proportioned and beautifully detailed. A central lawn is framed by a grid of stone paths with open grass-filled joints. Water steps lead south and east. The garden is understandably popular with sunbathers and sightseers. |

Drottningholm Palace |
Drottningholm Palace is another popular tourist attraction in Sweden . The magnificent Drottningholm Palace was begun in 1662, and was made mostly in Baroque style. The details are just breathtaking, with so much care put into each room. This is the residence of the Swedish Royal family. Outside of the Palace itself are huge gardens, the Chinese Pavilion and Drottningholm Court Theatre , and other auxiliary buildings in various styles. All are definitely worth seeing. Drottningholm exploits the surrounding landscape, like all the great baroque gardens. It was made for Queen Hedwig Eleonora, widow of Karl X, mother of Karl XI and grandmother of the warrior Karl XII. A wise and loved Queen, she tried to to restrain her grandson from the campaign which caused Sweden to lose her continental possessions. When acting as regent, her government was dominated by a chancellor who sought an alliance with Louis XIV. Drottningholm is thought to have been designed in France under Le Nôtre's supervision. |

Gamla Stan |
Gamla Stan is one of the primary attractions of Stockholm . It is conveniently located right in the middle of the capital, and can easily be explored on foot. Gamla Stan, literally "old town," is a small island in the middle of Stockholm . With narrow stone streets and old buildings, this is a charming area to walk about. You can get there on the T, or just by walking across one of the four short bridges that separates the island from the rest of Stockholm . Gamla Stan''s prime importance is its age, and in fact, it means nothing more or less than old town. This old town lives up to your imagination of one: narrow stone alleys meandering below the tall buildings, arches leading to still narrower alleys, old lanterns lighting the way for passers-by - not unimportant for a city this far north! Things you shouldn't miss include the Royal Castle and Storkyrkan ("the big church"). Tyska Kyrkan ("the German church") is also worth seeing. You can hang out in Stor Torget ("the big square"), sit on a bench, go to a restaurant or cafe. |
